case study: "captain bimse" (2018)
The challenge is NOT how to make a feature film with over 800 VFX shots on green screen. The challenge is how to do it on a Danish film budget of 2 million dollars, so that it looks like 100 million dollars.
The directorial team of Kirsten Skytte and Thomas Borch Nielsen – both with a background in animation and visual effects – talk about their methods and strategies for making the magical universe in their filming of Bjarne Reuter’s “Captain Bimse” premiering fall 2018.
Thomas and Kirsten aim to raise the barriers of visual expression in Danish children’s films, using new tools, like the game engine Unity to create virtual scenography, 3D software Blender to build the fixtures, DaVinci Resolve for editing, and Fusion 9 for compositing. All this software can be found in versions, which are free, and therefore available to everyone.
Is it possible to work in a way where not only producers with huge budgets can bring a fantasy universe to the screen? Can we democratize the film process, so that it is creativity, and not money that decides which stories we can tell?
