Announcing PICTURE THIS_17

The film industry does not remain unaffected. New technologies open for new production methods and new ways to experience cinema. So how can integrating new technology help increase creativity and streamline film production? That is the starting point for the conference PICTURE THIS_17, which explores the intersection of storytelling, new technology and visions for the future of filmmaking.

The conference is initiated and funded by the Nordisk Film Foundation which with the initiative wishes to give the film industry a friendly push forward. "We see a pressing need in the film industry for knowledge about the possibilities that new technology can provide in terms of enhancing the film narrative and anticipating the challenges of tomorrow," says CEO of Nordisk Film Allan Hansen on behalf of the Nordisk Film Foundation.

At PICTURE THIS_17, innovative filmmakers, technology and industry experts from around the world share their experiences with pushing the limits of film technology. Showcasing works-in-progress, case studies and technological tools, the topics include cutting edge image and sound technologies, creative collaboration between writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, production designers and VFX supervisors, the perspectives of virtual reality storytelling to filmmakers, the integration of game technology in film production and predictions of the future of cinema.

PICTURE THIS_17 is organized by the Filmworkshop in Copenhagen in collaboration with Danish film professionals and representatives from the Danish trade associations and artistic educations.

"We are happy that the Filmworkshop has accepted managing the task in close dialogue with competent industry players. Our goal is to inspire professionals from the entire supply chain of filmmaking to continue the evolvement of the cinematic art form, improve creative-technical collaborations and optimize film production. We are reaching out to the entire Nordic film industry and hope you want to participate," says Allan Hansen.

Speakers at PICTURE THIS_17 include narrative designer Alex McDowell who works with 'world building' at the intersection of design, technology and storytelling, as creative director of experimental.design and professor at USC. During his 35 years as a production designer, he has worked, among others, with David Fincher, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. Other speakers are previsualization specialist Albert Cheng who has worked on "Gravity," "The Martian" and "Edge of Tomorrow," among others, and Amaury La Burthe, CEO of AdioGaming, winner of the Storyscapes Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival with the VR projects "Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness" and a leading expert in technology for sound, film, games and VR.

Award-winning journalist and media commentator Kate Bulkley will moderate the event. The rest of the programme and speakers will be announced over the next two months.
