The Paradigm Shift of Virtual Production
WHY IT'S BIGGER THAN YOU THINK
In 2010 Habib and a team of developers at Microsoft developed a tool called Photon to enable high-end visuals and communication live on a Mocap stage. Three years later that technology got applied in the filming of The Jungle Book, and a few years later, Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. After leaving Microsoft to work back in Film, Habib joined forces with Wes Potter creating Expozure Virtual Film Tools that were used on Blade Runner 2049. These new tools will change how Pre-production, Previs, storyboarding, and Virtual Production filming will work together. It is this re-combination of how the process works that will bring about the Paradigm shift most underestimate. Habib has been developing real time cinematography tools since 2003 when he transitioned into the world of Interactive Games and has since been working to bring those capabilities back into the world of film. Digital Monarch Media’s Virtual Film Tools are currently deployed on Tom Hank’s film Greyhound.
Digital Monarch Media:
Digital Monarch Media was created in 2014 as a means to design, develop, and integrate real-time virtual systems into film productions. It was founded by a group of veterans from multiple disciplines and creative industries. DMM has played a dynamic and pivotal role in multiple Oscar winning productions and has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible in digital film making, be it with teams large or small. It's wide suite of software solutions, Virtual Film Tools, along with deployed systems such as Expozure and Cyclopz, built on Unity, have been and are continuing to be used by Directors, DPs, and Designers, as well as Artists and VFX houses worldwide. DMM's goal is to bring the stages of virtual cinematography into step with the pace of the creative flow. When asked what the future of film making is, DMM has responded time and again that the future is the film makers and that technology's role is to unify, extend and ultimately become invisible to this process.
Presenting on stage together with Habib Zargarpour is Julia Lou, R&D Software Developer_DOUBLE NEGATIVE, who will be addressing the evolution of Virtual Cameras.
