The Danish children’s adventure Captain Bimse premiered in cinemas this summer and is believed to be the first feature film in the world to combine a game engine (Unity) and live-action.
Directors Kirsten Skytte and Thomas Borch Nielsen set out to make a feature film with more than 1000 Hollywood-level VFX shots on green-screen but with a limited budget of 2 million dollars. A key element to reaching their goal was to use the real-time software from Unity to create the virtual scenography.
In this session, the director-duo returns to PICTURE THIS_19 to share their learnings from the trenches of real-time filmmaking: How was it done? What went well, what didn’t? How does real-time technology affect the creative process and why should more productions consider embracing this new tool in the toolbox.
