Session 1: How independent directors and studios are powering creativity and business with AI & VP

Without doubt AI is the buzzword for the industry 2024 with new tools and AI film competitions popping out like mushrooms after the rain, and different platforms are staking out in competition for better and more photorealistic and lifelike results.

But with sometimes unfathomable seeming toolspace, yet to be solved workflows for professional feature films and television productions, and issues in consistency and quality many still wonder whether the AI craze is still all about hype and less substance.

The first session brings together one of the world's leading AI film directors and educators helming equally behind the physical and AI camera, and one of Europe's leading innovation driven documentary and feature length production houses to explore and demonstrate how AI tools can and cannot be integrated for success in the professional industry here and now. The session thus is a once in lifetime opportunity to hear from pioneers of the AI wave how to maximize and take benefit for AI in the independent industry whether for commercials, feature, documentary or other creative projects.

Jorge Caballero wears many hats. He is a lecturer at Pompeu Fabra University and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he leads workshops at the intersection of technology, cinema, and social impact.

He has also collaborated with the UN on impactful projects and has conducted studies on the potential of cinema to induce pro-social behavioral changes. He co-directs a postgraduate program in Cinema Algorithms and AI at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and is close to publishing a book on artificial imagination.

Additionally, Jorge is the co-founder of GusanoFilms and Artefacto. The former is a production company which develops and produces non-fiction films and explores the possibilities between documentary and technology through digital, interactive, and immersive formats.

His productions have been selected and awarded at international festivals such as HotDocs, SXSW, DocNYC, Mar del Plata, Cinema Du Reel, Visions Du Reel, Málaga, DocsBCN, among many others, and have received support from the Sundance Institute and the Tribeca Film Institute. As a director, Jorge Caballero has twice won the National Documentary Award in Colombia.
