Dark Bay – A Revolution for Studio Shoots
The Dark Bay is one of the world’s largest LED-installations, was created out of the content creators perspective, based on the historic lot at Studio Babelsberg. Dark Bay was engineered with the support of the market-leading partners ARRI, Framestore, Faber AV and Studio Babelsberg.
As an industry first the studio operates a revolving stage with a diameter of 21m, which allows filming of real sets from all angles. This turntable carries up to 25 tons and can be rotated to any horizontal angle to support set changes without redressing. This way, physical space limitations of the LED wall are not existing anymore and conversion times are significantly reduced.
In this session Philipp Klausing, one of the managing directors of Dark Bay and executive producer of 1899, offers an insight into how virtual production manages to create a seamless transition between different realities. In particular how to embrace a fully VP dependent schedule and it s impact on regular departments like camera, lighting, set-design. He is also talking about how the in-camera result gives an authentic look in all layers and how the audience will be intrigued to enjoy fantastic worlds.
Philipp is a strong advocate of virtual production being a methodology not a rental product. It has the power to unleash creativity in regional markets and give more control back to the creators.
